Sing it with Soul
Schenectady Schools
Fine Arts wing, Schenectady High School - Schenectady, NY
June 2024
Overview
This mural is special in that it brings to completion a long anticipated unfinished student project. 4 years prior the original artist's intent was to paint a mural of student silhouettes playing music stanzas that stretch across walls, ceilings and hallways to connect multiple music classrooms.
When asked what best represents the spirit of the school, the staff responded with one word, “resilience.” This is why I chose the lotus, a representation of overcoming the challenges and obstacles many of the students in this district face daily. Growing out of the mud, submerged underwater; it requires patience and unseen effort. But in all of that struggle yields brilliant, bold blossoming young minds prepared to see obstacles as stepping stones and barriers as building blocks. With all of this in mind it was important that the mural reflect a calm, serene and peaceful aesthetic.
